Mirjam Schaub: Fotofallen der Selbstvergessenheit. Emanuel Mathias´künstlerische Forschung über Primat_innen und Primatolog_innen als Verhaltensparabel.
Even if it is true that ethology as a characterology is a lost discipline, behavior remains a category that makes living bodies observable and comparable and thus makes attributions of species – such as human/animal/ technical – pleasantly redundant. The article reflects on a collaboration between the artist and photographer Emanuel Mathias and the primatologists of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology on the precarious proximity-distance relationship to their respective research
objects. In this context, the behavioral-biological concept of habituation tentatively assumes media-philosophical significance. Mathias borrows it in order to determine both the appropriate distance/proximity to the photographically pursued in each case, as well as to release the behavior of the counterpart into a media-supported illusion of moving in the midst of the visible as in an optically unconscious space. Only in this way does the gift of self-forgetting succeed.
